Pre-diabetes is the condition just preceding diabetes. A person is in pre-diabetic situation when blood glucose level of body is higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. It is for this reason that pre-diabetes is also known as “pre-diagnosis” of diabetes. Here are some of the ways to prevent pre-diabetes from becoming type 2 diabetes:

 

Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle


Maintaining an active lifestyle is the most effective way to prevent pre-diabetes from becoming type 2 diabetes. In active stage human body make use of glucose. As a result, sugar level in blood remains under control. It also helps to improve insulin level production. Try to be active throughout the day, if your schedule requires you to sit for long then take out some time for exercise. You need not have Olympic training regime but must do exercises that consists of moderate activities.


Even half an hour exercise five days a week can keep you away from pre-diabetes. Walking, cycling, and swimming are some of best activities to reduce risk of pre-diabetes and finally diabetes.

 

Watch your Weight


If you are overweight or obese, work to control your weight. Just by losing 5 to 10 percent of your body weight you can considerably reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. Losing weight may first seem hard but it just requires little determination from your part. Start by cutting on calorie intake and doing regular exercises.

 

Stop Smoking

By quitting smoking you can considerably reduce risk of type 2 diabetes and other health ailments. Smoking increases blood glucose, trigger stress hormone and increase insulin resistance. All these factors collectively contribute to pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes.


Make Healthy Food Choices


Don’t aim to change yourself at a single go. It is not practical to make quick changes in eating habits instead start with small changes. First limit the amount of fat intake. Replace junks with your healthy favourites and include vegetables, fruits and fibre in your main diet.

 

Other ways to prevent pre-diabetes from becoming type 2 diabetes
