This one is for parents who smoke at home; in front of their children. According to a research, children who are exposed to passive smoking have a 50 % higher chance of developing two or more mental disabilities. These disorders include attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, conduct disorders and behavioural problems. This research was carried out at the Harvard School of Public Health and was headed by Hillel Alpert.
For the research, data collected for the 2007 National Survey of Public Health was taken into consideration. This data had collected information about close to 91000 children. 55358 children in this group were under the age of 12. This sub-group was the focus of the study and 6 % of this group was exposed to passive smoking in their house. When the relationship between passive smoking and the learning abilities of these children were looked at, it was found that they were at a 50 % increased risk of developing learning and behaviour related disorders.
The ill-effects of passive smoking especially on kids have been the topic of research and worry for long. This research only proves that smoking is not on harmful for the smoker but also for people who are around her/him.
