What is Parotitis?

When infection and inflammation occurs in the largest salivary gland known as parotid glands, it is known as parotitis. The inflammation leads to swelling of the tissues that surround the salivary glands, redness and soreness. These salivary glands function to produce saliva in the mouth which plays a significant role in cleansing of the mouth. When an inflammation occurs in these salivary glands, it reduces their ability to function properly and may lead to infections within the mouth.
