A new research conducted on a group of men has proven that even one sleepless night adds to your flab. This study was headed by Christian Benedict at the Uppsala University, Sweden. Benedict is of the opinion that a good night’s sleep is of importance as sleep triggers our body to function better.
The sample for the research was a group of 14 healthy male students. To monitor their weight management options, these people were put through various sleep cycles over a period of time. The cycles included periods of very little sleep, appropriate sleep and curtailed sleep periods. The changes in their dietary patterns, sugar and hormone levels and metabolic rate were recorded. It was seen that even one sleepless night actually slowed down their activity level and energy used for bodily tasks such as breathing and digestion. Their energy levels dipped between 5 – 20 %.
The research is an indicator of the fact that sleepless nights actively contribute to lifestyle related diseases such as obesity and eating disorders and add to our flab. Getting enough sleep may soon be looked upon as a method of weight management after this research.
