Meditating half an hour a day offers as much relief as conventional anti-depressants, finds a research in the U.S. involving 3,500 people.
A study at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, suggests that meditation for just half an hour can relieve depression as much as popping a pill. According to them, regular meditation could also relieve anxiety, pain and stress.
The researchers evaluated the degree to which those symptoms changed in people with a variety of medical conditions. They found moderate evidence of improvement in symptoms of anxiety, depression and pain after participants underwent what was typically an eight-week training programme in mindfulness meditation.
According to the study leader, Dr. Madhav Goyal, a lot of people have this idea that meditation means sitting down and doing nothing. Meditation is an active training of the mind to increase awareness, and different meditation programmes approach this in different ways. That is how it heals. People use meditation for stress busting and personal growth, 'but it's not a practice considered part of mainstream medical therapy for anything. Meditation appeared to provide as much relief from some anxiety and depression symptoms as what other studies have found from antidepressants.
