Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are infections that mainly spread from one person to another person by sexual contact. They are also known as sexually transmitted infection (STI) and venereal disease (VD).
Syphilis is caused by bacteria named treponema pallidum. This disease spreads through broken skin or mucous membrane. Even though the prime mode of its transmission is sexual contact but it can also be transferred from an infected mother to feotus. The stages of syphilis are Primary syphilis, Secondary syphilis and Tertiary syphilis.
The disease is caused by haemophilus ducreyi. Initially the problem starts as small bumps on the genitals but within a day of their appearance they transform into ulcer. Uncircumcised men are at much higher risk than circumcised men for getting chancroid from an infected partner. Chancroid is a risk factor for the HIV virus.
Sexually active individuals with multiple partners are at higher risk of getting Chlamydia. Burning sensation during urination, rectal discharge or pain, testicular tenderness in men and vaginal discharge in women are some of its symptoms.
It is a sexually transmitted viral infection. Caused by Herpes simplex virus type 1 and type 2, genital herpes is mainly caused by sexual contact. You can contract the virus when your skin, vagina, penis or mouth comes in physical contact with someone who already has genital herpes.
Genital warts are soft lumps on the skin and mucus membrane of genitals. These warts are caused by human papilloma virus (HPV). Though there are no evident symptoms of genital warts, but appropriate treatment is important for avoiding further complications.

HIV infection is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus. It gradually destroys the immune system of the person thus making it difficult to fight with other infections as well. The terms HIV and AIDS are often used interchangeably but technically AIDS is the final stage of HIV. AIDS severely damages the immune system.
HIV/AIDS spread through sexual intercourse, blood transfusion, needle sharing and from a pregnant women to her fetus.
Pediculosis pubis is caused by a parasite that infests the human genitals. It is a sexually transmitted disease that can also extend to the other body parts. It is caused by crab louse and affects about two percent of the world’s population.
It is another type of sexually transmitted disease that is caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. Trichomoniasis can affect both men and women but the maximum number of cases is reported amongst women between the age group of 16 to 35.
