Information retrieved with the help of Right to Information Act shows that around 128 kids died after vaccination in 2010. This disturbing study has the Union Health Ministry of India in a tizzy. The information also clearly shows that these 128 kids died of adverse effects after immunisation (AEFI). AEFI also states bad quality of vaccine, compromised vaccine and physical conditions of the child as probable reasons for deaths. However, officials have claimed that vaccination at this point in time cannot be held solely responsible for the death of these unfortunate kids.
Medical experts are of the opinion that the Indian government does not follow the Brighton Collaboration criteria on AEFI deaths adopted by the World Health Organisation (WHO). This criterion states that if no apparent reason for death in kids in confirmed then the vaccine used on the kids should be considered a potential reason for death. The Ministry however, is of the opinion that these deaths are the result of negligence and failure to adhere to medical and safety tips on the field. Most deaths after vaccination in 2010 were recorded in Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu registered the least number of deaths due to vaccination in 2010 at 8.
Many kids’ deaths have been reported after vaccination from various parts of the country but 2010 clocks in at the highest with 128 deaths.
