Kidney stones can cause sudden onset of excruciating, cramping pain in the lower back and/or in the side, groin, or abdomen. This is the commonest reason for a person with kidney stones to visit the emergency room (ER). Your doctor will evaluate you and give medications to reduce pain. Some reasons to call your doctor or visit the ER are:
- If the kidney stone does not pass by itself through the urinary tract.
- If the pain does not get relieved with medication and continues to be severe.
- If along with stone pain you have fever (may be the sign of a serious infection).
- You have severe nausea or vomiting that prevents you from drinking fluids.
- Past difficult episodes of stone related pain.
