A recent study that was published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine said that exercising at a later age will still help people to put away dementia and ill health. The study followed about 3,500 healthy people at/around the retirement age. Researchers observed that those people who exercised were three times more likely to stay healthy over the next eight years compared with those of their same age and who led a sedentary lifestyle.
Exercise has been known to cut the risk of stroke, heart disease, diabetes, depression and Alzheimer’s disease. Those people, who took to exercising when they were over 60 years old, had less chances of struggling with the everyday activities like dressing and washing.
After about 8 years of follow-up, a fifth of the population that participated in the study was termed as healthy i.e. not suffering from any major physical or mental illness. The group majorly constituted those who always exercised along with newcomers to exercise. A few of the group were those who did not exercise at all.
Researchers say that performing exercises throughout one’s life is ideal, but there are health risks that will develop when you start performing exercises at a much later stage in life, though the impact would be lesser than what would have been had one never exercised before.
