Could it be true? Is it possible that your parents and their forefathers are responsible for your lustful obsession to play away from home? You can’t take all the flack for your licentious mind and your wandering eye, you inherited it from your ancestors; they were just as naughty as you were and there’s no denying it. In fact, there’s clinical evidence to back it up.
A new study - championed by Justin Garcia at the State University of New York in Binghamton - has reported that the genes which influence alcohol addiction and gambling may also be aligned with infidelity and sexual promiscuity. He investigated the chances of infidelity being a hereditary condition as opposed to something which is acquired by the individual through his various life-experiences.
Garcia and his staff decided to focus their research on the DRD4 gene, which dictates behavioral tendencies in feel-good areas, such as sense of humor, gambling, alcoholism.
They asked 181 individuals about their sexual history and took a DNA sample from each. Individuals with a genetic variation of 7R+ were more likely to be unfaithful or promiscuous. Of the 181 people processed in the study, 50 per cent of the 7R+ variation admitted to being unfaithful at some stage of their lives, whilst only 22 per cent did from the group independent of this variation.
Dr. Garcia said regarding his findings: “What we found was that people with a certain variant of the DRD4 gene were more likely to have a history of uncommitted sex, including one-night stands and acts of infidelity.
“The motivation seems to stem from a system of pleasure and reward, which is where the release of dopamine comes in. In cases of uncommitted sex, the risks are high, the rewards substantial, and the motivation variable -- all elements that ensure a dopamine ‘rush.’”
No real hard evidence
However, Garcia concluded that the study didn’t formulate any conclusive evidence to suggest that there are biological factors behind a person’s decision to engage in promiscuous behavior. Afterall, not everyone within the genotype are infidels and not everyone out of it are faithful; he was merely suggesting that there may be some evidence to circulate the theory. Much more research on a larger number of people using more advanced algorithms would be needed to make such a declaration.
But now, at the very least, there’s something to blame for your naughtiness. But, will you be brazen enough to bring it up at the dinner table of your next family gathering when your parents and your wife/partner are sitting adjacent to you? Best to wait until the time is right, eh?
