According to a report, nearly 1-2 percent of Indian women experience menopause symptoms between the ages of 29 and 34 years. The risk of menopause increases by 8 percent in women between the ages of 35 and 39 years.
Dr Manish Banker, the group director at Nova IVI fertility elaborated on how falling egg reserves among Indian women affect their fertility potential, how ovarian egg reserve can be tested and why one should start a family early.
According to the report, Indian women’s ovaries age six years faster than Caucasian women. The doctor also mentioned that the common causes of infertility – low ovarian reserve or premature ovarian failure, were more prominent in women below the age of 36.
The ideal age for a woman to get pregnant is between 25 and 35 years. The ovarian reserve begins to decline after the age of 35, and with increasing age, the quality and the quantity of the eggs also diminishes. The number of ovules in the ovary reduces after the age of 35 among Indian women.
Even if a woman above 35 years conceives, there are high chances of a miscarriage or a birth defect in the baby due to an advanced age.
Premature ovarian failure (POF) is a condition where there is a psychological decrease in the number of eggs, impacting the chances of pregnancy. Ovarian reserve is the pool of eggs present in the ovaries. A decrease in the number of these ovaries lead to infertility and makes it hard for women to get pregnant. Most of these infertility cases include women with POF.
A number of factors lead to infertility including smoking, the use of contraceptive pills, certain surgeries, cancer therapies, lifestyle habits and family history.
For a woman who is at risk of developing POF or ovarian reserve, early diagnosis and treatment are necessary to be able to conceive. There are some tests also that can help predict the fertility potential of women including Follicular Stimulating Hormone (FSH) test, basal estradiol and antral follicular count, AMH test, etc.
