Watch your Weight
Being overweight influences the fertility levels of a woman immensely. You, however, don’t have to lose weight to see any improvement in your fertility. Women, who are underweight, also have decreased fertility. A woman whose body fat levels are about 10 per cent to 15 per cent below the normal range may experience a drop in ovulation and therefore, she will have to lose the extra weight to get pregnant right away. She should switch to diet that enhances fertility and consult a trainer to follow a regular exercise routine. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say, “The key to achieving and maintaining a healthy weight isn't about short-term dietary changes. It's about a lifestyle that includes healthy eating and regular physical activity. If you are underweight, overweight or obese, talk with your doctor about ways to reach and maintain a healthy weight before you get pregnant.” For starters, 15 minutes of brisk walking in the morning can show improvements in fertility levels in a few days or weeks.
Know your Fertile Window
If you want to get pregnant right away, you will have to determine when your fertile window (the days when you ovulate) starts and ends. Several studies have shown that sex during the fertile period is the most effective in getting pregnant. If you have a regular cycle, you may not necessarily keep a check on when the fertile cycle starts and ends. But, if you have irregular periods or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), you may need to determine your fertile days with either the help of an ovulation calculator or by checking the basal body temperature. To know when you are ovulating, you need to chart the length of your period and then, look out for ovulation signs. Ovulation happens between 12 to 16 days from the last day of the last menstrual cycle. During these days, you may experience pain on either side of the abdomen, a little increase in your body’s basal temperature and presence of white vaginal discharge. Alternatively, you may use ovulation kits to know your fertile days.
Say Goodbye to Lubricants
Lubricants can inhibit your chances of conception. Your body makes its own natural lubricant in the form of cervical fluid. The cervical fluid is ideal for transporting sperm from the penis to the vagina. Besides, the pH level in artificial lubricants may kill or damage the sperm. Lubricants also slow the sperm down, thereby, creating a barrier between the egg and the sperm. Your gynaecologist, however, may advise you to use vaginal lubricants as part of your fertility treatment. So, ask them which one is the best to be used. Learn its potential side-effects before you use it and it would be better if you try to conceive without a lubricant.
Have fun when having Sex
Sex, sometimes, becomes mechanical when it is hard to have a baby. It is only when you enjoy having sex that you make the process of conception less stressful. The fluid that comes out of the vagina of a woman when she is aroused is secreted from her vaginal walls and is similar to cervical fluid, but not the one coming from the cervix. This fluid does not really transport the sperm, but may help in making the vaginal environment less acidic and therefore, safe for the sperm to enter.
Try the best sex position
Sexologists consider the missionary position (man on top) to be the best position to optimise your chances of conception. This position is helpful in taking the sperm closer to the cervix, however, all deep-penetrating positions aid in the movement of the sperm. Besides, the cervical mucus is enough to take the sperm towards the egg. In the book Dr. Ruth's Pregnancy Guide for Couples: Love, Sex, and Medical Facts, Dr. Ruth Westheimer said that the missionary position is good for those trying to conceive as when a woman is doing it, the vagina forms a cup-like shape to receive the semen. He further added that to improve the chances of pregnancy, a woman may tilt her pelvis upward by placing a pillow or a cushion under her pelvis.
Before you employ ways to get pregnant, you must also know the factors that can decrease your fertility. Smoking is one of the biggest reasons why men and women have reduced levels of fertility. Smoking has forever been linked to decreased fertility levels. Toxic chemicals present in cigarettes not only affect the lungs but also severely harm the entire body and the reproductive system. Being a smoker can cause the following fertility related issues in women trying to conceive:
• ovulation problem
• damage to the reproductive organs
• premature menopause
• damage to the eggs or ovum
• and genetic issues.
The American Society for Reproductive Medicine in its Patient’s Fact sheet on ‘Smoking and Infertility’ says, “The prevalence of infertility is higher, and the time it takes to conceive is longer, in smokers compared to nonsmokers. Research indicates that cigarette smoking is harmful to a woman’s ovaries, and the degree of harm is dependent upon the amount and the period of time a woman smokes. Smoking appears to accelerate the loss of eggs and reproductive function and may advance the time of menopause by several years.”
Here is how women trying to conceive can quit smoking.
• Set a date when you plan to quit and DO NOT CHANGE IT.
• Let the people around you, be it your friends or colleagues, know about your ‘quit smoking plan’ so that they can remind you and motivate you every now and then to do away with smoking.
• Anticipate the problems you may face after quitting smoking and plan in advance how to overcome them.
• Remove cigarettes and other such products from your home, car and cabin.
• For self-motivation, read more on how smoking causes hurdles in smooth pregnancy and affects the whole body. You may also ask your doctor about the same.
If in spite of resorting to the aforementioned steps you have a tough time giving up smoking, consider taking help of therapists or counsellors.
If you fail to conceive despite all your efforts, see a doctor to find out if there is any underlying condition that may be waving your chances of getting pregnant. It can be an underlying disease that requires immediate medical attention before it aggravates and kills your chances of getting pregnant.
