Prostate cancer, as the name suggests, starts in the prostate gland (located below the bladder, in front of the rectum). According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is one of the most preventable cancer forms.

There is not much evidence to suggest that prostate cancer can be prevented, but healthy and active lifestyle can help lower the risk.

 

Eat a healthy diet

One of the best approaches to avoid cancer is a healthy diet. Health experts suggest a diet high in whole grains, fruits and vegetables to keep one’s prostate healthy. Lycopenes, beta-carotenes and cruciferous vegetables (particularly tomatoes, sweet potatoes, broccoli and cauliflower) can be effective to ward off the cancer risk. Cruciferous vegetables contain a chemical called sulphoraphane, which has been proved to lower testosterone levels and thus, fighting prostate cancer.

Sweet potatoes, and carrots contain beta-carotene that boosts wellness and strengthen the body's immune system. A study at the Harvard University suggested that men, who stopped drinking milk and consuming dairy products, cut their risk of prostate cancer by up to 40 percent. Milk and dairy products were replaced with soy and rice milk. Also, health experts warn against the consumption of red meat, fat and processed foods.

 

Stay active

Physical activity is important for prevention of any disease, prostate cancer is no different. There is no scientific evidence linking prostate cancer to obesity, but you must exercise regularly and maintain a healthy weight.

 

Don’t smoke or drink

Cigarette smoking puts you at a greater risk of cancer. To keep your prostate healthy, quit smoking. Alcohol intake is as bad as smoking; limit your alcohol consumption if you choose to drink at all.

 

Understand the warning signs

Prostate cancer is a slow growing cancer form that rarely causes physical symptoms until advanced stages. Urinary problems (such as an intermittent stream or increased frequency), blood in urine, swelling in lower extremities and blood in semen are indicative of prostate cancer. Urinary problems are sometimes caused by non-cancerous prostate problems; get yourself evaluated to figure out the cause.  The cancer form may affect libido; your ability to maintain an erection can be affected.

In the advanced stage, a prostate tumour can cause bone pain in the lower back, pelvis or hip. According to the National Institutes of Health, back pain needs to be evaluated by a doctor as it may be a warning symptom of prostate cancer.

 

Get regular health checks

Men over 50 must get a physical exam performed annually. If you notice any signs, report them to your physician immediately. Early detection of the disease during a digital rectal exam or a prostate-specific antigen test can help treat the condition.

 

Prevention is the best way to ward of health ailments. There are endless approaches in terms of dietary and lifestyle choices that can help you minimise the onset of prostate and other forms of cancer.
