PMS food cravingsExperts have different opinions to give to reason why these hankerings happen in women when they are due for their periods. While some scientists say that the cravings are triggered by a drop in blood sugar levels as a result of low progesterone levels and high estrogen levels, others say that it could be because of a drop in serotonin levels. Whatever your cause may be to get pregnant, you’d know when you are craving for something. And, here are some simple ways in which you can quickly fix these cravings.

Eat Complex Carbohydrates

One of the best ways to prevent PMS cravings from troubling is by storing food like a camel would store water. Eat complex carbohydrates that are rich in fibre. It takes a long time for the body to break down and absorb complex carbs. This would help you to curb your cravings. Some of the food sources of these carbs include whole-grain cereals, breads, fruits, legumes and starchy vegetables.

Eat Six Small Meals in a Day

Eating small, frequent meals will help you to regulate the blood sugar levels and keep cravings away. If not really curb the cravings completely, the small meals will keep you from binging and thereby, putting on weight. Divide the three big meals to as many small meals as you are comfortable with. Ensure that you space these meals our every three hours to keep fuelling your body.

Pick Protein

If you include protein in your diet i.e. in every meal or snack, you will be able to moderate the imbalances in your blood sugar levels. This will also slow the process of digestion, thereby helping you feel less hungry. But, when you choose proteins, make sure that they are good for you; these could be chicken, turkey, eggs, peanut butter and fish.

Relax and Kick Stress

It is important to not let go of the fact that stress can make your cravings worse. So, try to relax and take deep breaths when you feel stressed out. Practising relaxation techniques every time you feel stressed or anxious can help you fight cravings.

Expose yourself to the Sun as much as Possible

Lack of natural vitamin D can cause the serotonin levels to dip, thus increasing cravings and appetite. Do not sit back at home just because you are feeling fatigued, pull yourself together and get outdoors in the sun. Let the shining rays raise your levels of serotonin and reduce carb and sugar cravings.

Save heart, cravings are not something that should be devastating, especially if you are looking forward to losing weight. You can manage your body’s ability to fight cravings with just some of the simple steps given above.
