How to Get Pregnant without Sex

Assisted reproductive technologies are easy way to get pregnant without sex. These technologies are been largely used by single women desiring a baby, couples that are facing fertility problems, by lesbians and many others who want to get pregnant without heterosexual intercourse.

In vitro fertilization (IVF)

As the name suggest ‘in vitro fertilisation (IVF)’ implies to fertilization outside the body. It is also known as test tube baby because the very first In Vitro fertilization was done in a test tube. With IVF you also have an option to go for multiple pregnancies.

  • Planning: Before in vitro fertilisation the couple has to undergo medical and physical examination. First the doctor checks the sperm quality of male and keeps track of menstrual cycle of female.
  • Procedure: Sperms (from male) and egg cell (from female) are allowed to meet outside woman’s body. Ones the fertilisation occurs successfully, the eggs are cultured in controlled laboratory environment to transform into pre-embryo. The fertilised eggs are injected into uterus by a thin plastic tube, called catheter. After this intra-uterine development starts and woman will have normal pregnancy.
  • Success rate: If planted in right manner, IVF is the most convenient method of artificial reproduction. In some of the cases IVF works in a single attempt while in most of the cases it takes time to lead to successful pregnancy.

Artificial Insemination

In artificial inseminations the sperms are injected directly to your reproductive track.  This method is mostly used when the male is not able to ejaculate or the female partner has some problem with her ovulation period. Artificial insemination must be performed by a health care provider, preferably a reproductive endocrinologist.

Procedure: A speculum (plastic or metal instrument) is inserted in to vagina for to hold up vagina and get closer to cervix. After this, one end of catheter is inserted to vagina to reach the cervix and syringe filled with sperms are attached on the other end. The sperms are pushed to reach cervix. A sponge is kept at vaginal opening to prevent loss of sperms. The entire procedure takes very minimal time i.e. ten to fifteen minutes. However, after artificial insemination the person is asked to take rest for half an hour.

There are four types of artificial insemination:

  • Intrauterine insemination (IUI)- IUI involves insertion of sperms directly to the uterus. This procedure is painless and takes only few minutes.
  • Intravaginal insemination (IVI)- it is the least common artificial insemination method. Here the partners sperms are simply taken into syringe and are inserted in vagina. IVI is good for couples who have problem of ejaculation during sexual intercourse.
  • Intracervical insemination (ICI)- here the fertilised sperms are placed near the cervix. ICI works best when there is no issue in quality of cervical mucus and sperm quality.
  • Intratubal insemination (ITI)- in ITI the sperms are inserted into fallopian tube. It can either be done intercervically or by a laparoscopic surgery.
