Prostate cancer refers to the cancer of the prostate gland, which is a male-specific, walnut shaped gland close to the reproductive organs. Prostate cancer is a common type of cancer in men that affects at least one out of every six men during their life. This type of cancer causes symptoms such as difficulty in urinating, minor incontinence and pain while ejaculating or urinating. Exercising after prostate cancer treatment helps in contributing to reducing the spread of prostate cancer. Therefore, it is important to make an effort to exercise post treatment of prostate cancer. Here’s how.
Avoid engaging in strenuous exercises that will irritate the area around the prostate gland if you have gone through a surgery or other invasive procedure. Dodge exercises that put a lot of pressure on the perineum such as box squatting, stationary cycling or any other activity that can cause discomfort. If you experience regional pain that may be triggered the exercise, immediately switch to another.
Let your body get in the tune of doing exercises without risking excessive strain when you are on your way to recovery from prostate cancer treatment. Mild to brisk walking is an amazing way to exercise, especially for individuals, who are either not used to doing exercises or unable to give 100 per cent to challenging activities. You may walk for up to 30 minutes per day aiming at elevating heart rate and breathing level to derive the maximum benefits. If you plan to adopt walking as your exercise, make sure you walk in a fast pace for 30 to 60 minutes four to five days per week and at a slower pace for 40 to 60 minutes once or twice per week. Walking in a quick pace helps in training the heart and fasten the healing process.
Ensure that you perform some form of exercise at least five days per week to ensure that you reap the benefits quickly and effectively. You may also choose to do more exercise on days you feel comfortable doing them. Doubling normal exercise sessions will provide you with extra benefits and a minor buffer against all those days that you feel dull. Do not feel dejected if you miss out or skin a day’s exercise due to your physical condition. Try your best to work through exercising after prostate cancer treatment.
