The first step to caring for your skin is to identify your skin type because each skin type has its own need and understanding the type is necessary.

Taking care of your skin should be an integral part of grooming as it all shows up on your face. Before you blindly follow a skin care regime it is essential that you understand what your skin requires. By knowing the basic skin types you can help yourself decipher the products you would need or the ways in which to take care of your skin. There is no guarantee that you will get a flawless skin, but your skin will not be harmed in any way for sure. Here's how to identify your skin type:

how to identify your skin type

There are 5 different types of skin

Normal Skin – If you have normal skin type then the tissue will not reveal any traces of oil, and your skin will feel vibrant, elastic and supple. Your skin would ideally look clean and smooth.

Dry Skin – Dry skin will be flaky and tight and can develop a swallow tone, wrinkles, and fine pores. Dry skin is also very prone to ageing and it feels irritating. To keep it healthy you have to take care of it regularly.

Oily Skin – When you have oily skin your face looks greasy, thick, coarse, and shiny with enlarged pores, and this tends to give way to acne. The good part about having oily skin is that it is not very prone to ageing or wrinkling. You should avoid rich creams.

Combination Skin – Most women tend to have a combination of dry and oily skin and it requires different types of care when you have to maintain such skin types. The dry zones are usually at the cheeks and around the eyes should be treated with rich creams and moisturisers and the oily areas which include the forehead and nose should be cleaned thoroughly.

Sensitive Skin – This type of skin tends to be dry, and feels tight, also it gets irritated easily. Sensitive skin develops reddish and scaly areas and it itches.

How to determine your skin type

Step 1 – You should remove make up and wash your face with a gentle cleanser, finally patting it dry. This will clean all dirt and oil from your skin.

Step 2 – Wait for an hour after washing your face as this allows your skin to return to its normal state. The characteristics of this will determine your skin type and you should not touch your skin during this time.

Step 3 –
Dab your face with a tissue and concentrate the nose and the forehead, these are the two most important areas.

Step 4 – Finally you will need to determine the skin type according to the result that shows on the tissue.

• Normal skin would not show any oil or flakiness.
• Oily skin would show up on the tissue very easily in the form of grease.
• Dry skin may show flakes of dry skin on the tissue.
• Combination is the most common one, as it exhibits traits of all the above.

Taking care of your skin should come with your instincts; it is after all your face that is the window to your inner self. Know your skin type and take proper care.

I am not sure about my skin type. It's oily the whole year so I hardly use any moisturizer. But in winter, it's so dry that I have to apply thick cream 2-3 times a day. This has started only after my pregnancy 3 years back. I have started using Parachute Advansed body lotion that has coconut extracts. I don't have any complaints till date. & now I apply it only twice a day, once after my bath and second after I wash my face in the evening. Can you advise if it's ok?/help me with other suggestion
