How to deal with PMS

Premenstrual Syndrome, also known as PMS, is one of the common problems faced by women before their period. The symptoms of PMS vary considerably; while some women may experience only minor cramps, others may complain of migraines and severe nausea. How to deal with PMS

 

  • Relax! The best way to deal with PMS is by relaxing the body and mind using techniques such as meditation, yoga or relaxation exercises. Soothing music also calms the mind and alleviates the symptoms of PMS to a large extent.
  • Exercise regularly as it increases the endomorphin levels in the brain. At least 20-45 minutes of exercise thrice a week is needed to deal with PMS in an effective manner.
  • Drink plenty of water and eat whole grains and vegetables to deal with PMS.  Avoid caffeinated drinks and alcohol.
  • Supplements such as calcium, magnesium, vitamin B6 and vitamin E are known to be helpful in PMS. Take a supplement to ensure that your cravings and food choices don’t lead to depletion of nutrition in the body.
  • Laugh a lot. This will also increase the endomorphin level in your brain and make you feel better. You can spend time with positive friends or watch a comedy movie to uplift your mood.

  • Pain relievers such as Ibuprofen or naproxen sodium-based tablets also provide relief from cramps. They also relieve the pain caused due to the swelling in breasts which is a common symptom of PMS.
  • You can use a heating pad to relax the muscles and seek relief from pain in lower abdomen or lower back.
  • Use diuretics to reduce bloating, which is a common symptom during PMS and causes a lot of discomfort.
  • Indigestion is common during PMS. Eat small meals to deal with PMS as six to seven small meals a day get easily digested.

Although there is no single way to deal with PMS, certain lifestyle changes and diet variations can help you cope better. In case of extreme pain and migraines, it is always better to consult your doctor. Gynaecologists can rule out any serious problems such as endometriosis and make a proper analysis to extend potential relief.
