Cartoon MosquitoChikungunya is a viral disease which has symptoms similar to that of dengue fever. The chikungunya virus called CHIKV is transmitted through Aedes mosquitoes when they bite humans. The virus family to which CHIKV belongs to is Togoviridae and the genus is Alpha virus. Till date there has not been a reported case of person-to-person spread of this infection.

Dengue and Yellow fever is caused by virus that is carried by the same mosquitoes. This implies that chikungunya can be found in many parts of the world. Genetic analysis of this virus has revealed two distinct virus types, one belonging to Western Africa and the other to Eastern Africa and Asia.

Since chikungunya is transmitted by mosquitoes, mosquito control becomes essential in its prevention. Controlling the transmission of chikungunya virus needs to be given special importance simply because of the potentially fatal complications of the disease. Fever, severe joint pains, nausea, convulsions and even death results if the complications of chikungunya are not controlled.

The fever mostly subsides in 2 to 5 days but the complications may take weeks to go. From drawn out fatigue to unbearable joint pain, the long lasting complications are more fatal. Since chikungunya fever is not as big a problem as the complication of damage to the immune system, it is important that the patients take adequate steps to strengthen it.

In fact many cases are detected of people infected with this virus but show no signs of any illness. This can be only put down to better immunity which does not allow the virus to play havoc with the health of a person. Chikungunya can also be prevented by controlling factors external to the human body. An important factor in the transmission of chikungunya fever is the presence of stagnated water that results in a sudden rise in multiplication of mosquitoes that cause this health condition.
