Dysuria is a symptom of discomfort, pain or a burning sensation associated with urination. It is used to describe painful urination usually caused by an infection of the lower urinary tract. A person with infection of the lower urinary tract may experience burning, stinging, or itching during urination.
It is more common in older men as compared to younger men. However, overall it is more common in women than in men. The gradual or sudden appearance of the symptom, the frequency and the time when it is felt may vary depending on the cause of the discomforting urination.
The common causes of dysuria usually include infections such as urinary tract infections, sexually transmitted infections, inflammation and irritation. The most common cause of all are the infections caused by bacteria in any part of the urinary tract, including kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. The sexually transmitted infections such as genital herpes, chlamydia and gonorrhea can also commonly cause such painful urinations.
Problems that can cause inflammation or irritation of the urinary tract or genital area can also lead to the symptom of painful urination. Stones in the urinary tract, cycling, irritation of the urethra from sexual activity, vaginal changes and tumor in the urinary tract are some of the problem that can commonly cause inflammation and irritation leading to the symptoms of dysuria.
The best way to prevent dysuria is to prevent the causing factors that usually lead to the burning or itching urination. Drinking plenty of water daily may help keeping the urinary tract clean which may be very helpful in preventing the symptom of discomforting urination.
Women should be extra careful about the way they clean themselves. Avoid wiping from back towards the vaginal region which may bring some bacteria to the front leading got an infection. Always wipe from the front towards the back. It would also be useful to urinate after an intercourse as it will flush bacteria, if any, from the urethra.
Women should change innerwear and sanitary napkins frequently to keep the genital areas clean and dry. It will help prevent the symptom caused by irritation. Also avoid chemicals and harsh sops around genitals. Use condoms and practice safe sex measures in order to prevent the symptom caused by sexually transmitted infections.
