What is eczema?

Eczema is chronic recurring, non-contagious, inflammatory skin disease. It affects about 10 - 20 percent of the world population. The characteristic features of eczema are red, dry and itchy rash in mild disease and cracked, bleeding and oozing lesions in severe disease. The disease usually follows a course of repeated flares and remission without any apparent cause. According to research a person develops eczema due to genetic predisposition and an altered immune response to certain specific stimuli (internal or environmental).

Atopic eczema (dermatitis) is the commonest type of eczema. It usually starts in early childhood (between two-to-six months of age).  In most people eczema starts before the age of five.
