Sore calf muscle is a common problem, especially amongst athletes. Some of their main causes are- vigorous exercise, heavy weight lifting, and climbing stairs. Here are some of the effective home remedies to prevent and cure sore calf muscles:
In case you have sore calf muscles while you are exercising or working out, you should immediately stop. Do not strain your muscles any further as it may lead to some serious muscle injury.
Try to relax your sore calf muscles with the help of ice and hot water bottle. Applying ice will help in reducing swelling of the muscles. However, in case of severe soreness where ice is of no help, massage your calf muscles with hot water bottle or apply heating pads. Heat should be avoided in the initial 24 hours of soreness in order to reduce the risk of swelling.
Take help of electric bandage in order to reduce swelling. Wrap the bandage around the sore calf muscles firmly, but make sure that the bandage is not extremely tight as it may swell the muscles just beneath the bandage.
Dehydration and loss of electrolytes is one of the main reasons of sore calf muscles. Therefore, it is advisable to increase your consumption of fluids. Oral rehydration helps in getting relief from sore muscles.
Place your calf muscles in an elevated position. You can use a pillow or a box to rest your muscles upon it. It will reduce swelling and pain and will be beneficial in increasing the mobility of your legs.
Use a soothing balm for gently massaging the sore area of your calf muscles.
Diet plays an important role in curing sore calf muscles. Include fresh fruits and green vegetables in your diet as it will provide you with all the necessary nutrients needed for quick healing.
Make sure that you are using proper footwear that provides necessary comfort to your soles while walking.
Stretching plays an important role in curing sore calf muscles. Here are some of the stretching exercises that will help in easing the soreness of calf muscles: Place your hands against the wall for support and place your legs at a distance of one foot from one another in such a way that the fore leg should bend and the hind leg should be straight. Switch your legs after few minutes in order to stretch both the legs. Position your hands against the wall to obtain necessary support and place both the legs straight together. Bend over your hands in order to feel the stress on your calf muscles.
Place your knees right beneath your hips and hands under the shoulders. Thereafter, turn your toes and spread the palms. Lift the knees by straightening your arms and legs in such a way that the butts are facing upwards and greater part of the body weight rests on legs. Thus you can feel the stretch on your calf muscles.
These simple home remedies are very effective in relaxing sore calf muscles. However, if the soreness persists for a longer period of time, it is advisable to see a doctor.
