As many nutritional deficiencies can result due to cancer, a high protein diet is often recommended for such patients as a means to regain the lost nutrition. It is needed to promote healthy weight in patients and prevent decomposition of muscles. The high protein diets for chemo patients are based on their activity level, weight and various other factors.
You need to consult a registered dietitian for informing you about your specific requirements of nutrition.
Healthy sources of protein which should be included in your diet for chemotherapy are nuts, seeds and legumes. These include many dried peas and beans. Some of the high protein sources of nuts include almonds, pistachios, walnuts and cashews. Peanut butter is also a very good source of high protein and the advantage of having it is that it can be added to any dish such as fruit, toast and crackers. You can get four grams of protein with merely one teaspoon of peanut butter. By having nuts and seeds, you can also have plenty of vitamins, minerals and dietary fibre.
Cancer patients may develop metabolic problems because of the cancer treatment that they undergo. After this their body can become averse to fats, as a result of which it cannot break down the fats properly. For this problem, the patient is asked by doctors to be on low or high fat protein diet. The food items that need to be included in such a diet are cottage cheese, yoghurt and others if the patient is able to tolerate them.

Cancer patients who have lactose intolerance are not able to produce lactase. It is an enzyme that helps to digest some sugars that are found naturally in dairy products. It can increase the discomfort of patients leading to conditions such as diarrhoea, gas and bloating. They need to find proteins found in foods that are free from lactose. These include coconut milks, almond, rice and soy and the foods that are made from them.
You can also have liquid nutritional supplements such as shakes that are found in formulae meant for tube feedings.
High protein diet and chemotherapy procedures must be given due consideration before the complete diet of a patient is formulated. It would not be a comprehensive way of trying to recuperate from the side effects of chemotherapy if the diet for chemotherapy does not include sufficient amount of protein foods.
