Why You Feel Super Sleepy after Having Meals

It is very common for us to feel heavy headed and sleepy after eating food, and here are some probable reasons for it.

    Sleeping after a Meal

    It the luxury of lying after eating a heavy meal which makes life worth it, it makes you realise that these are the little things that makes life worth living. But on the day you have an important meeting at work, and you have had a nice meal with your colleagues, what about that day? That is one disaster we want to avoid, but unfortunately good food always takes out the lazy in us. When sleeping is as addictive as the cigarette between your fingers, it becomes a problem, a very big problem. Why do we feel sleepy after eating a nice meal?

    Excessive Secretion of Insulin

    During excessive insulin secretion in our body, tryptophan moves to the brain and here it gets metabolised into serotonin and melatonin which are neurotransmitters. These neurotransmitters have a calm effect which helps you to relax and sleep. You should choose natural foods which are high in fibre and protein.

    Eating Processed Foods

    If you notice carefully, you will realise that eating processed foods can make you feel very heavy and sleepy. While it is kind of normal to feel heavy after eating food, if you feel overly heavy then think back at what you ate. It could be due to the high levels of sugar and refined carbohydrates, these foods results in low energy and you will be sleepy!

    Food Allergies & Intolerance

    If you have food allergies or what we also call as intolerances then this will definitely be associated with your digestive problems and hence you will experience bloating, flatulence, constipation or even diarrhoea. Remove foods that pose as a threat to you, if you cannot bear certain foods as they lead to allergies then skip them and see how you do.

    Fatty Meals

    Now if you gorged on a big piece of steak and finished it with a very creamy desert then what do you expect. Fatty foods are hard to digest, and your body requires more amount of blood in the digestive system. So, the blood gets drained away from your brain and this makes your sleepy.

    Ineffective Breathing

    This is especially true for obese people who overeat and at the same time breathe in an ineffective way.  The solution to this problem is reduced breathing so that you can prevent being hungry and eating fats and complex carbohydrates. Every time an obese person eats complex carbohydrates or fats, the oxygen levels in the body tend to become worse. This induces sleep.

    You aren’t well

    Be careful because one reason why you are probably not able to stand still after lunch time is because you are not very well, and this is causing your energy levels to fall. Being unfit or unwell can be a major cause of feeling sleepy after a meal, and you need to visit a doctor to see what is wrong with you.

    Lack of Sleep

    Finally, if you haven’t had good sleep the other night then after good and hot lunch your body would want to shut down. It would want to rest and you better give it some rest before it collapses! It is very important to sleep well.
