Urethritis is an inflammation of the urethra, the thin tube that carries urine out of the body from the bladder. This medical condition can easily get transmitted to female partners as well.

    What is Urethritis?

    Urethritis is an inflammation of the urethra, the thin tube that carries urine out of the body from the bladder. This medical condition can easily get transmitted to female partners as well. Although, it can occur without being sexually transmitted, majority of cases of urethritis are due to an infection acquired during sexual intercourse. It may even cause infertility in both men and women.

    Causes

    Urethritis  is usually caused by infection by bacteria that commonly includes, E. Coli, Chlamydia, and Gonococcus. These infectious agents usually get transmitted via sexual activity and may therefore, cause urethritis in both men and women. The bacteria enter the urethra from the skin around the urethra's opening.

    Symptoms

    Often caused by bacterial infection, urethritis may produce distinctly different symptoms in men and women. Clear or white discharge from penis in men along with burning sensation while urinating in women are some common symptoms. The symptoms can be mild and may therefore, be overlooked.

    Diagnosis

    The diagnosis of urethritis is usually done by observing the initial symptoms of the disease. Tests for gonorrhea, chlamydia, or other bacterial infections can help confirm the diagnosis. Urine tests and examinations to check for any discharge under a microscope are done to confirm Urethritis.

    Treatment

    If left undetected and untreated, Urethritis can lead to the spread of the infection to the prostate gland or testicles. Antibiotics can successfully cure urethritis. However, it is difficult to get rid of and symptoms may return. It is very crucial to complete the treatment.
