Tips to Teach Your Baby to be a Great Sleeper

You must have tried various styles of night-time parenting which might have helped a little. Here are some time-tested, proven attitudes and techniques for getting a baby to sleep.

    The Sensible Sleep Advice

    Mothers who have young children who keep them awake all night will understand how insufficient sleep can turn them into a screaming monster who snaps at everyone. What's worse is that there is no one way of teaching your child to sleep. Fortunately, the good news is that with following sensible sleeping advice, you can actually inculcate good sleeping habits in your munchkins. All you need is to have realistic expectations.

    A Soothing Bedtime Routine

    A warm bath followed by a massage that lasts for about half an hour will provide a very soothing bedtime routine for your baby. All habits from early childhood don’t leave us for a life time and so it is a good routine which will prepare your baby for sleep.

    Set a Bedtime

    It is important for your child to sleep at the same time every day because it inculcates a habit for life. A set bedtime helps them learn discipline and then once their body gets used to this bedtime, they will naturally feel sleepy at the set clock. Fixing the sleeping time between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. is the best because it can provide you with some adult time.

    Daytime Naps are Good

    A well-rested baby sleeps better than a sleep-deprived one; it’s strange but true. Newborn babies sleep for about 3-4 times a day and there is nothing wrong if your child wants to sleep during the day. It wouldn’t rob them off their sleep at night. Observe their signals of tiredness and allow them time for a good daytime nap.

    Don’t be a Sleep Prop

    Babies usually have a favourite thing that they need every night to help them fall asleep. If you are your baby’s sleep prop, you might have to do it for at least coming two years. Ask yourself if you are okay with it. It would be much better if your baby’s teddy is their sleep prop. You will just not have to lose it ever.

    Let Them Fall Asleep by Themselves

    Most parents put their children in the crib after they have slept fully and this doesn’t teach them to sleep on their own. This will mean that every day you will have to cradle them to sleep. If you’ll out your child in the crib awake, they will get used to this ides and will fall asleep by themselves. For this, they have to be sleepy and not actually asleep.

    The Room Should be Dark

    Darkness stimulates melatonin (sleep hormone) circulation in the body. If your baby’s room has windows, cover them with thick curtains so that there are minimal disturbances from the outside for them. Keep the lights in the room dim at sleeping time though there shouldn’t complete darkness.

    Avoid Sudden Noises

    Protect your baby’s sleep from background noises like that of cars, vacuum cleaners, or mixer grinders. Sudden loud noises like a strange booming voice or the door bell will probably wake them or sometimes scare them too.
