Tips to Help you Stop Yelling at your Children

There are many habits of your child that can bring your passive-aggressive side out making you end up yelling your lungs out at them. But, you must know that this behaviour can be counter-productive. Here is how you can stop it.

    Been There, Done That?

    Yelling at a child? If you are a parent you surely would have been there, done that. The moment your child says or does something that can push you to the limits, you start yelling your lungs out. But as soon as you hit the moment of realization you feel drained, upset and frustrated with your behaviour. There are various reasons that could trigger your aggressive side but, as a parent you have it at the back of your head that shouting at your child will not resolve the issue and could in fact make matters worse. So, here is some support for you that will help you become a better and a less aggressive parent.

    Quit the Screaming Match

    If you find yourself stuck in a screaming session with your kid, you must tell yourself repeatedly that you can quit whenever you want to. Even if you have just begun screaming at each other, it is time to stop.

    Wait for Sometime

    Even if it takes 10 minutes or 24 hours, give you anger some time to calm. Let it cool down a bit; when you think that you are in a better state of mind to talk your child, speak to him/her politely. This will also give the child to reflect upon his/her behaviour.

    Distract your Mind

    A simple trick to cool down your head is to count till ten. You could also take a walk or perform any activity. When you are clueless about the reason behind your frustration and you know that you are overreacting to a situation, disengage yourself.

    Give yourself some Space

    Don’t just start yelling at your child as soon as you enter the house. Take ten minutes to freshen up, gather your thoughts and then talk to your child. At first they might look eager to talk to you as soon as you reach home but with time they will get used to waiting.

    Prepare Yourself

    While you are on your way back home, plan how you are going to react. Think of all the possible things that your child could have done in your absence and what could be a better way to react. Prepare yourself mentally to make sure you do not yell at them.

    We all have things that can set our mood off and mostly all these things are irrational. As a parent you should always know these triggers. Teach yourself how to respond to situations which can set you off.

    If you really wish to put a control on your aggression, start thinking about the after-effects of yelling at your child. Do a review session and look for ways to communicate more effectively.

    Yelling may be a result of having more control. Thus, you must speak to your spouse or friends who can give you ideas about what can be done to be a calmer you.
