Banana leaves are rich in plant-based compounds called polyphenols such as epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG, which is also found in green tea. Polyphenols are natural antioxidants that fight against free radicals and therefore, help in preventing diseases. Since you cannot eat banana leaves directly as they are not easy to digest, eating food on banana leaves allows the food to absorb the polyphenols. It is also believed that banana leaves have anti-bacterial properties that kill the germs in the food. Image Courtesy: fineartamerica.com
Banana leaves have a waxy coating on them that adds a subtle but distinct flavour to the food. The wax melts under hot food, thus adding its flavour to the food. So people eat their food on banana leaves because it tastes even better. Image Courtesy: www.pioneerchef.com

Banana leaves do not require a lot of cleaning. Due to the waxy coating even rinsing it with water removes everything from its surface. So, they are easy to clean and make a good choice for hygiene conscious people. Just a rinse and they are good to go.
Since you need to wash metal plates with soap and gels, traces of the chemicals in the soap may still remain on the plates, contaminating your food. Banana leaves just need to be rinsed with little water, and need no soap to be cleaned off toxins, so your food has no risk of contamination with chemicals from dish-bars or gels.
