    There is a reason why essential supplements are called "essential’’. It is because the body cannot produce them which can hamper the digestive system. Since the body does not produce them naturally it is important for you to eat supplements to ensure digestive health. Mostly you get all the necessary nutrients that boost your digestion from the diet you eat but it would not hurt to have supplements if you wish to ensure a fully functioning digestive system. So, here are some essential supplements that can compensate for the missing digestive nutrients in your diet.

    Probiotics

    Probiotics have living organisms, mainly bacteria and a type of yeast. These are like the good bacteria in the gut that boost digestion. These supplements can be used to treat some gastrointestinal problems and for general digestive health. some types of probiotics may be used to give relief from diarrhea and may also be useful to relieve the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. Add them to malted milk or yogurt and see the magic.

    Licorice

    The supplement has been used for a long time to treat symptoms of indigestion like heartburn and acid reflux. These uses have not been proven scientifically though. If used in the unpurified form, licorice can have side-effects, which includes high blood pressure in some cases. DG, which is a specific extract of licorice, does not have side-effects because some its chemicals are removed. However, it is not recommended for pregnant without consultation.

    Peppermint oil

    There have been studies that suggest that peppermint oil can lessen the pain and bloating caused by irritable bowel syndrome. The capsules are coated with enteric which prevents it from dissolving in the stomach. This makes them pass through to the small and large intestines, where the oil is released. When taken in small doses peppermint oil is considered to be safe.

    Chamomile

    Chamomile has been used widely for treating multiple ailments. There have been attempts made by naturalists to treat digestive problems like upset stomach, colic and nausea and also anxiety and insomnia with chamomile. However, people who suffer from plant allergies like ragweed can be allergic to chamomile as well. Before consuming the supplement a consultation must be taken from your doctor.

    Ginger

    Due to its medicinal properties ginger has been widely used to treat a number of ailments. There have been Asian medicines that use ginger to treat stomachaches. Ginger is available in powdered form inside capsules or tablets. Besides, you can always consume ginger in freshly cut form. Although it is always considered to be safe to consume, having ginger in small doses is always advisable. If you experience digestive problems regularly, consume 1 to 3 grams of ginger in a day.

    L-glutamine

    Glutamine can be found in the body naturally and it supports the intestines and other organs. Supplement L-glutamine can be used to relieve diarrhea induced by surgery, infections or stress. Consumption of L-glutamine can also help some people absorb nutrients from the diet. People who have too much unfriendly bacteria in their digestive tract, people who take medication for cancer and people have a part of intestines removed are unable to absorb nutrients from the food. In such cases, having L-glutamine can be highly beneficial.

    Psyllium

    Psyllium is used an essential ingredient in bulk laxatives. Its high fiber content can help it absorb in the intestines thus, making the stools bulkier and easier to pass. When a person suffers from constipation, they are suggested to drink plenty of fluids which allows them to allow dehydration and worsen the case of constipation. However, people who are allergic to English plantain pollen, grass pollen or melon can have a serious allergic reaction to psyllium.
