Holi brings a lot of stress to hair and skin. Follow these simple precautionary measures before you go out and let your skin and hair have an enjoyable time.

    Don't Let Colors Spoil Your Holi

    While you are gearing up for the festival of colors, one important thing to keep in mind is that colors bring an inevitable onslaught on your skin and hair. Colors are the essence of this festival but they can damage your hair and skin beyond measures and sometimes beyond repair. Follow these tips and brace yourselves for the attack of harmful colors beforehand.

    Oil Your Hair and Body

    Apply warm olive, castor or coconut oil on your hair. In case you are suffering from hair related problems like dandruff, make sure you add 8-10 drops of lemon to your oil. Apply oil on your entire body at least 20-25 minutes before you start playing with colors.

    Moisturize Your Body

    Moisturizer with a sun block formula must be used all over the body. Body parts like ears, backside of ears and ear lobes should not be neglected while you apply moisturizer. You are going to spend a good amount of time outside your house exposed to the sun so, ensure that your moisturizer has an SPF.

    Wear Appropriate Clothes

    Opt for full-sleeved clothes and avoid synthetics. Go for salwars or cotton leggings because your heavy denims will start giving you a hard time once you are drenched in water. Full-sleeves and high necks will prevent your skin from coming in direct contact with the chemically treated colors.

    Apply Nail Paint

    You must not forget to protect your nails which are equally at risk while you play with colors. Apply a protective coat of nail paint before you start off.

    Drink Water

    Before you start playing with colors, drink lots of water so that your skin remains hydrated throughout. Also, keep sipping liquids while you are enjoying the festival.

    Avoid Glasses and Contact Lenses

    When many of your friends and family members attack you with colors, the edges of your glasses can hurt your face. If you cannot avoid glasses, be extremely careful. Wear lip balm before you start. Also, avoid beauty treatments like waxing, threading, facial massages, etc. 3-4 days before Holi.

    Aloe Vera

    If your skin feels irritated due to colors, apply aloe vera gel, cucumber juice or rose water immediately to soothe it.

    Use Milk and Besan Paste

    Once you are through playing with colors, the next task is to remove them from the skin. While doing this, you must avoid scrubbing and use a paste of milk and besan to clean your face.

    Use Glycerin Based Soaps

    In desperation to remove the colors completely from the body, you may end up using harsh detergent based soaps. Avoid this and use only glycerin or aloe vera based soaps. Your skin has already gone through a lot. Be generous to it and apply a mild moisturizer after bath.

    Use Cold Water

    Remember that using hot water to clean the colors on your body will make them stubborn to remove. Splash cold water and try to avoid exposing your skin to the sun till it recovers from the damage.
