    The Wonderful Mediterranean Herb

    Rosemary is a Meditteranean herb that has needle-like leaves and pink, blue or purple-coloured flowers. Rosemary gets its name from the Latin words ros meaning dew and marinus meaning sea. Apart from being using in lots of culinary dishes for its powerful flavour, it is also used for medicinal purposes. You will be amazed to discover some of the health benefits of this wonder herb.

    Prevents Cancer

    Researchers say that a potent anti-cancer compound called carnosol is present in rosemary. They have found promising results when they tested the efficacy of the herb against a variety of cancer forms such as that of the breast, colon, prostate, skin and bone. In a particular study, powdered rosemary was given to rats for over two weeks and it was found that the consumption of rosemary reduced  bindign of carcinogen that was given to the rats by about 76 percent. This also inhibited the formation of breast cancer tumours.

    Improves Memory

    Rosemary has been thought of as a memory-enhancing herb since a long time. Researchers have found that it contains diterpine that has neuroprotective properties. They believe that this diterpine may help in the protecting of a person against Alzheimer's disease as well as the general loss of memory that happens with ageing. An appalling aspect of rosemary is that even its smell is said to enhance the memory.

    Helps Fight Migraine

    Migraine is a common medical problem that every third person is dealing with, today. For centuries, rosemary has been used as a natural remedy for migraines. Boil rosemary in a large pot of water and pour it into a big bowl. Now, place a towel over your head and lean over to inhale the steam. Do this for at least the next ten minutes. Since rosemary is said to improve one's memory, inhaling it further will help one to maintain a better state of mind.

    There are two potent anti-inflammatories that rosemary contains; these include carnosol and carnosic acid. A study had found that these two compounds inhibit a certain enzyme called COX-2 that triggers pain as well as inflammation in the body. These compounds were also found to inhibit the production of nitric oxide that plays an important role in the inflammatory process.

    If you have bad breath, use rosemary as a natural mouthwash and you will observe that you have suddenly started to have a fragrant breath. To make a mouthwash out of rosemary, steep fresh the rosemary in a pint of warm water. Strain the mixture and use it to rinse the wya you like. You may keep the mouthwash in the fridge if you wish to make it last long.

    Rosemary is a natural remedy for respiratory problems. Breathing in the scent of rosemary oil can help one to treat congestion occuring as a result of allergies, colds, flu and respiratory infections.
