A study in the journal PLoS ONE suggests that chewing gum may be as beneficial to oral hygiene as flossing. In the study, researchers had five subjects chew gum for different lengths of time. After they were done, the researchers found up to 100 million bacteria in gums. This is quite close to the amount of bacteria removed from a good flossing.
