Health benefits of cranberry juice
Prevents urinary tract infection
Several studies have shown that cranberry juice is effective in preventing urinary tract infection. It contains compounds called proanthocyanidins that prevent the bacteria from binding to the cells of the bladder walls. Besides, these compounds help prevent the bacteria from spreading and flush them out of the body via urine. Consumption of cranberry juice makes the urine more acidic, thereby creating an environment that is unfriendly for the bacteria to flourish. Drink cranberry juice on a regular basis to prevent urinary tract infections, especially during pregnancy.
Has anti-tumour properties
Cranberry juice has polyphenol compounds that has anti-tumour effects. Drinking cranberry juice on a regular basis inhibits development and spread of lung, breast, colon and prostate tumours. In addition, the salicylic acid reduces swelling and prevents formation of blood clots, reducing risk of cancer.
Improves cardiovascular health
Cranberry juice is known to lower risk of heart-related ailments and improve cardiovascular health. Regular consumption of cranberry juice decreases the threat of atherosclerosis, an obstruction in the flow of oxygen-rich blood to various parts of the body, which can prove fatal at times as it leads to heart attack or stroke. Cranberry juice can effectively suppress oxidation of low-density lipoprotein and support formation of blood platelets.
Combats tooth decay
Cranberry juice is also helpful in preventing tooth decay. As told above, cranberry juice contains proanthocyanidin that prevents growth of plaque-causing bacteria, thereby preventing tooth decay due to development of cavities. Maintain good dental hygiene and regularly drink moderate amount of cranberry juice to disrupt the mechanism of pathogenesis. You can even try unsweetened cranberry juice to decrease incidence of bacteria that are found in the mouth.
Proanthocyanidin in cranberries helps prevent growth of cancer cells in the body. Studies have shown that people who eat diet rich in flavonoids have reduced risk of cancer. It also contains anti-carcinogenic compounds, which inhibit the growth of cancer cells, particularly those that cause colon and prostate cancer.
