Causes of Grogginess in the Afternoon and Ways to Overcome

Who doesn't get the urge to take a quick nap in the afternoon? But, that does not materialize every time. So, here is how you can overcome the strong urge to sleep in the afternoon.

    Afternoon Grogginess

    It's the middle of the day and you are feeling as if you can’t make it through the rest of the day without taking a nap. In order to keep yourself motivated, you try to drink coffee or snack on something but nothing seems to help you.     Self-Induced Causes

    Not getting enough sleep can be one of the major causes of afternoon grogginess. Too much intake of caffeine or sugar throughout the day can make you feel drowsy and unmotivated. Being disorganized can be another reason for your grogginess.  If you are someone who does not like to plan his day, it is possible you can get overwhelmed very easily and drain all of your energy without even getting all of your tasks completed.     Natural Causes

    Well, apart from self-induced causes, there may be natural causes behind your grogginess. A slight drop in temperature that is part of the body's natural biorhythms can cause the problem. This drop in temperature tells the body to prepare for sleep. An increase in the level of the hormone melatonin that is produced by the body can also make you feel tired, thereby causing grogginess.     Eat a Good Breakfast

    One should make healthy food choices a part of their breakfast meal. These healthy options include wholegrain breads and cereal, fruits and yogurt. Eating healthy breakfast helps you to feel less tempted to resort to unhealthy food choices during lunchtime. It not only keeps your physically fit but also mental well being throughout the day.     Get Some Sun

    Get up from your seat and go outside to soak in some light. Even in winter, exposure to sun can revitalize you. During winter people often experience four o'clock fade so it makes sense to get outside as much as you can during the work day to rejuvenate yourself. 10 to 15 minutes sun exposure can make a significant difference to how you feel.  Image Courtesy: Getty

    Practice Deep Breathing

    Close your eyes and take deep breaths as you focus on your health. Inhale and hold your breath for a few seconds and then exhale to the count of four. Repeat the same three times.     Avoid Fast Food

    Most fast food are full of fats, sugars, salts, preservatives, and flavour enhancers. It tastes great on the spot and feels like an energy boost but what is important to keep in mind before you eat it is that it can fill you with calories that lack nutrients, and is a very unhealthy fuel for your body.
