    We all have a nose below our eyes and this nose has the ability to smell. From the wet earth after the first showers to the pungent smell of a garbage dump, our nose says it all. Smelling is one of the five senses that we as humans have been gifted, but how much do you know about your nose?

    14 Types of Noses

    An Israeli professor of chemical engineering Abraham Tamir surveyed images of 1,793 noses and he came to the conclusion that they all can fall into these basic types of noses. These range from the Greek nose which is straight to the hawk nose which is sharp and downward hooking. The most common nose is the fleshy nose.

    The Power of Smell

    The smell that you get with the help of your nose is starkly different from the smell that another person would get. No two people smell possessions the same, and this is because exact odours we cannot pick up. This is the reason why when room freshener is sprayed; you and your friend might detect it as two different smells.

    Your Nose Grows Downward

    Your nose will have taken shape by the time you hit the age of 10 and your nose would continue to grow slowly until you are 15 to 17 in women and 17 to 19 in men. However, your nose would lengthen and droop over time due to the tug of gravity and the breakdown of proteins collagen and elastin in your skin that happens gradually.

    Nose is connected to Memory

    Your sense of smell is connected to your memory and this is the reason why at times you get transported back in time after getting a whiff of any particular smell. Your smell is directly connected to the limbic system, and this is the part of the brain that is responsible for the attribution of emotion to events. In fact, out of your five senses, the sense of smell is the only one to have a direct pathway to the brain.

    Nasal grooves in our nostrils are rich with pheromone which is a chemical that is released by animals and humans to elicit behavioural responses such as sexual attraction. So, smooch away while you can, your nose is by your side!

    Can’t Smell? It’s Lethal!

    Your nose is a sensitive organ, but if you are unable to smell something then that is lethal. But how would you know! A perfect example would be natural gas that is used for cooking which you can very well smell during an event of a leakage. But gas companies have added the compound mercaptan in order to give natural gas a perceptible odour.
