There are a lot workout habits that may turn out to be counterproductive. Here are some of the common ab workout mistakes and how you can avoid them.
  • 1

    Know the Abs

A combination of two muscles – transversus abdominis and rectus abdominis – make abs. The latest fad in the fitness industry is a nice flat stomach, referred to as ‘six-pack’. To sport a ‘six-pack’ abs, you need to do a lower ab routine, an oblique routine and an upper ab routine. (Image source:Getty)

    Crunches Only

Ab workout comprises of much more than just crunches. It may surprise you that you can adorn  a flat six-pack abs even without doing crunches. Crunches are important; however, over working your abs with crunches can make them soft because the muscles don’t get enough time to recover and build. (Image source:Getty)

    Forgetting the Lower Abs

Many neglect the lower abs as they’re less visible than the upper abs. The fact is that working out the lower abs is as important as upper abs, as both of them are connected. To train lower abs exclusively, reverse crunches and leg or knee raises are the two best choices. (Image source:Getty)

    Not Enough Core Exercises

Most people don't do enough of exercises that work out the core. Strengthening of core is important as they stabilize your upper body. Every time you train your abs, make sure you make time for rest of your core too. (Image source:Getty)

    Cardio and Running

Steady pace running is one of the best conditioning exercises, but it is not as good a routine for six pack abs. You do need cardio exercises, but too much of it may have a negative effect on your pursuit for a perfect set of abs. (Image source:Getty)

    Not doing Rotational Movement

Rotational movements are an important part of any abs workout. The abs not only work when you perform a sit up or crunches, the ab muscles also work when you rotate sideways. (Image source:Getty)

    Over-exercising

You may think training harder can give you better and quick results, but that’s not the case. Too much of exercising is bad and there looms a risk of an injury too. The right way is – give your muscles the rest they need between exercises. (Image source:Getty)

    No Compound Movements

Abdominal muscles work directly when you do crunches and sit ups. But, abs also work when you perform compound movements such as heavy military press or a heavy squat. (Image source:Getty)

    Doing only High Reps

One of the most common ab workout mistakes is doing only high reps. They prove to be excellent in increasing muscular endurance, but may not help in abdominal development. The complete abs workout must include the low to moderate rep range too. (Image source:Getty)
