5 Foods to avoid on an empty stomach

One may think it's a healthy choice to eat a banana or drink a cup of coffee first thing in the morning. But, they may be those foods that shouldn’t be eaten on an empty stomach.

    Banana

    Rich in powerful antioxidants, nutrients and phytochemicals, bananas offer many health benefits. It is one of the foods to avoid on empty stomach; eating banana on an empty stomach increases the amount of magnesium in the body and thus causes an imbalance in magnesium and calcium levels in blood.

    Tea and Coffee

    Drinking tea provides a variety of health benefits, but the beverage also has higher level of acids that can affect the stomach lining when consumed on an empty stomach. Likewise, coffee is among the bad foods for empty stomach because of the presence of caffeine. It is best to drink a glass of water before you make tea or coffee for yourself.

    Spicy food

    Eating your favourite spicy foods on an empty stomach can prove dangerous. It disturbs the natural acids present in stomach, and may in fact, cause acidic reaction in the stomach’s lining. A common symptom of such reaction is cramps.

    Tomatoes

    Tomatoes are sweet, juicy and delicious but one of the harmful foods for empty stomach. The acids in tomatoes combine with gastrointestinal acids in the stomach to create insoluble gels, which can lead to stomach calculus, also known as stomach stones.

    Colas

    All the sugar and artificial sweeteners in cola/soda can be quite harmful, even more so when you take them on empty stomach. These are high in carbonated acids, which when combined with stomach acids lead to health problems such as nausea and heartburn.
