Our skin often goes cranky and we rush to the dermatologist to get it fixed. However, a lot of times, an underlying condition could be the result of those skin woes. Here are four things your skin doctor isn’t telling you about your skin, because of course, they too have to make money.

The real deal with skin issues

When your skin is on the fritz, dermatologist’s office is the first place you head to, because after all, they are the skin pros. But, you could unintentionally be ignoring a bigger, underlying cause if your dermatologist is aiming to suppress only your visible symptoms, while they might be signs of imbalances elsewhere. The correct and most effective way to calm your narky skin is to deal with the real cause of it. Here we get to the root of four skin woes that go more than skin deep.

Acne can start in your gut

When there is an imbalance of bacteria in your gut, the good ones are too few and the harmful ones too many, and this leads to a leaky lining in your intestines. This could release toxins into your bloodstream that cause inflammation in your entire body and also show up on your skin as a breakout. You can curb inflammation by eating a diet rich in fermented foods, such as yogurt and kimichi. These foods help good bacteria in your gut to flourish.

Psoriasis may be a sign of arthritis

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition that causes red, itchy scales (plaques) all over the body. It can be linked with arthritis inflammation in your joints. The National Psoriasis Foundation warns that people with plaque and joint pain, stiffness or swelling could be suffering from psoriatic arthritis. About 30 percent of all psoriasis patients may develop psoriatic arthritis. You should immediately tell your doctor if you already have psoriasis and suddenly experience joint pain. In fact, in 85 percent cases of arthritis, psoriasis shows up long before any pain.

    Rosacea can be hormonal

Rosacea is a condition in which certain facial blood vessels enlarge, giving the cheeks and nose a flushed appearance. Thanks to all the hormonal changes you go through as you near menopause- think ages 35 and 51. Rosacea is far more common in women as compared with men, by the way. You can eat foods that promote liver detoxification to regulate your hormones. Cruciferous veggies, onions, garlic, and beets are some of such food options.

Your eczema might be an allergic reaction

Eczema is a medical condition in which patches of skin become rough and inflamed with blisters, cause itching and bleeding. An unknown food allergy is the root cause of this skin condition in many people. When an allergen enters your body, its immune system is amped up, which causes inflammation. As a result, histamines (chemical neurotransmitters) are released throughout body tissues, which can lead to eczema eruptions. The biggest offenders for causing a food allergy are dairy, gluten, soy and peanuts. But, they could differ for each person, so it helps to keep a food diary to pinpoint sensitivities.
