10 ways Diabetics can Prevent Amputations

Diabetes is one of the leading causes of limp amputation around the world. If you are diabetic, these tips will help you keep the risk of amputation at bay.

    Preventing Foot Ulcers

    Since diabetes can destroy nerves and cause poor circulation, diabetics are more likely to develop leg and foot ulcers and other such problems.     Keep your Feet Clean

    You must keep your feet clean and protected. Wash your feet everyday for a couple of times with lukewarm water.     Check your legs regularly

    If you are diabetic you must check your feet once every day for ulcers, cracks, cuts, redness, swelling and sores. Use a mirror to check your feet thoroughly and consult your doctor if you notice anything. Image Courtesy: Getty

    Never walk barefoot

    Don't Self-treat

    Trim your toenails carefully

    You must take extreme care when trimming your toenails. Losing focus for even a second while you are using tools on your nails can cause a tear here and a wear there.     Change your socks daily

    Quit Smoking

    Wear fitting shoes

    Choose your shoes carefully. Don’t wear anything that doesn’t feel completely comfortable on your feet. Make sure that your shoes have proper support and cushioning for the feet.     Avoid injuries
