Foods are generally eaten so that one can be healthy but certain foods can make you sick. These foods can cause food poisoning because of contamination. You will be shocked to see some of your favourite "healthy" food options in this list of foods that you should never take a bite of.

    Risky Foods

    Food poisoning is an awful, sometimes, a life-threatening experience. And it is hard to decide which foods could be causing the problem because the instances are relatively rare. All of us know that we should avoid food kept or cooked in unhygienic conditions but there can be certain food items that should be dealt carefully with. The Center for Science in the Public Interest has issued a list of the top 10 FDA-regulated foods linked to outbreaks since 1990. You will be shocked to find some on this list because you had so far been under the impression that they make a healthy diet.

    Leafy Greens

    Your favourite go-to salad greens have caused 333 outbreaks involving 13,568 reported cases of illness since 1990. Lettuce, spinach, endive, cabbage, kale, arugula, and chard, all can be contaminated with manure, dirty water rinses, or unwashed hands before reaching your home. You should always wash the produce to avoid cross-contamination. Also, wash your hands before handling the greens.

    Eggs

    Your favourite breakfast item has caused 352 outbreaks since 1990 because it may contain Salmonella bacteria. Proper cooking of eggs is important to kill the bacteria because they may hang around in the egg. Eating raw eggs even in the cookie dough should be avoided.

    Tuna

    Tuna can be contaminated with scombrotoxin which can cause flushing, headaches, and cramps. There have been 268 scombroid poisoning outbreaks due to eating tuna since 1990. Fresh fish can release this toxin when stored at above 60 degrees after being caught, which cannot be destroyed with cooking.

    Oysters

    They are a pricey delicacy available in restaurants, but before reaching there, oysters lurk on the ocean floor filter feeding. And if the water they are filtering is contaminated, the oysters become the same. They can also get contaminated during handling. Raw or undercooked oysters can give you nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea because they may contain a gut-churner called norovirus and a bacterium known as Vibrio vulnificus.

    Potatoes

    A nicely cleaned and well-cooked spud doesn’t cause any illness but potato salads can be tricky. Cross-contamination, which is a transfer of germs from one type of food, usually meat, to another- can cause the problem. Illnesses related to potatoes have been traced to germs like Listeria, Shigella, E. coli, and Salmonella.

    Cheese

    Cheese can cause outbreaks and make people sick even when consumed at home. Salmonella or Listeria can contaminate cheese and cause miscarriages. This is why pregnant women are often advised against eating soft cheeses such as feta, Brie, Camembert, blue-veined and Mexican style cheese.

    Ice Cream

    Ice Cream can actually make you scream like the little jingle we used to sing in childhood “I scream, you scream. We all scream for ice cream?” Since 1990, ice cream has caused 75 outbreaks because of bacteria like Salmonella and Staphylococcus. The ice creams made at home with raw eggs are all the more dangerous.

    Tomatoes

    Tomatoes, just like lettuce can be contaminates before entering your household. But, you can control the contamination by not allowing the bacteria to grow and multiply. To do this, wash your hands 20 seconds with warm water and soap before and after preparing fresh produce; wash fruits and vegetables under running water just before eating, cutting, or cooking.

    Sprouts

    Sprouts are the face of healthy food, but they can be vulnerable to bacterial contamination. The sprouts’ seeds can get contaminated in the field and germination can be encouraged by the water and warm growing conditions. Due to this boosted bacterial growth, children, older people and those with a weak immune system are adviced by the FDA and CDC to avoid eating sprouts.
