The Grapefruit Diet, or the Hollywood Diet, has been followed since 1950. It is a quick weight-loss diet that has many different versions. The diet is based on the theory that certain enzymes present in grapefruit encourages burning of fat, and thereby rapid weight loss. Certain people claim that you can lose up to 10 pounds after 12 days on the Grapefruit Diet.

The Grapefruit Diet: How to Follow It

During Grapefruit Diet, a person can eat half a grapefruit (or drink a cup of unsweetened grapefruit juice) before having breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The Grapefruit Diet meal plan contains very less carbohydrates and calories (about 800 calories daily). The diet while on Grapefruit Diet contains limited calories for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You can have high-fat meats, coffee, and tea while you are on Grapefruit Diet, but avoid exercises as the your diet has very less calories while you are dieting.

The Grapefruit Diet: The Pros

According to experts the positive aspects of the Grapefruit Diet is that it can really result in weight loss. However if there is really a substance in grapefruit that promotes weight loss is not known. But some evidence indicates that grapefruit is a good ingredient of a weight-loss diet. In addition fruits are good for health and eating grape fruit is a sensible thing to do when you are trying to lose weight.

The Grapefruit Diet: The Cons

Grapefruit diet is useful for weight loss, but there are several disadvantages in it

The value of grapefruit for weight loss is overestimated. Experts say that any diet which has very less calories and fruits (in fact any fruit oranges or apples or grapes) will definitely result in weight loss and hence there is nothing magical about grape fruit. Besides this any weight loss program which so limits calories so rigorously will cause temporary weight loss. You are bound to gain back the weight right away. The diet lack a proper composition –as it contains too high-fat meats which are not healthy and if you overeat it may actually result in gain weight while on diet.

The Grapefruit Diet: Drug Interactions

While on grapefruit diet there is a likely risk of drug interaction. It can increase the risk of drug toxicity and adverse effects of certain drugs like--

  • Statins
  • Anti-arrhythmic medications
  • Immune system suppressants
  • Calcium channel blockers

Before you start grapefruit diet consult your doctor if you are risk of adverse drug interaction.
