A new study has shown that having a healthy lifestyle which includes maintaining a healthy weight and diet, not smoking and having a controlled intake of alcohol can prevent four out of five coronary events in men.
The reduction in mortality rate from heart disease in recent decade has been attributed to the medical therapies. According to the researchers, the prevention of heart disease through a healthy lifestyle can protect a person from the potential side effects of medication and can be a very cost effective method to reduce coronary heart disease population-wide.
During this study, researchers examined 20,721 healthy men from Sweden who were aged between 45 and 79 years. The participants were observed by researchers for 11 years. The lifestyle choices of these men were examined through a questionnaire about their diet, alcohol consumption, smoking status, level of physical activity and abdominal adiposity.
In this study, men who did not smoke, walked or cycled for at least 40 minutes a day, exercised at least one hour in a week, had a waist circumference of below 95 centimeters, consumed moderate amount of alcohol and had a healthy diet which included regular intake of fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, reduce-fat dairy products, whole grains and fish were found to be at the lowest risk.
This meant that men who consumed a low-risk diet with a moderate consumption of alcohol were at 35 per cent lower risk of a heart attack compared to the group which had none of the low risk factors and were at a higher risk of a heart attack.
Associate Professor at the Institute of Environmental Medicine, Karo-linska Institutet, Stockholm and the lead author of this study, Agenta Akesson said “it is not surprising that healthy lifestyle choices would lead to a reduction in heart attacks”.
Akesson added “what is surprising is how drastically the risk dropped due to these factors”.
