Facial light treatments are relatively new cosmetic treatments and in a short period of time, they have become widely demanded. These treatments aid in retaining skin elasticity, glow and firmness by reducing all aging signs and diminishing scars. Light treatments have proved to be effective in toning the skin and preventing or reducing skin discolouration.  Here is the list of a few facial light treatments which are popularly used for skin rejuvenation.

Intense Pulsed Light Therapy (IPL)

IPL therapy has been proved to be an effective cosmetic treatment method for reducing the appearance of aging signs, such as skin discolouration, wrinkles, fine lines and acne. Furthermore, it has been used many times for the removal of unwanted hair from the face. It is a laser resurfacing treatment which uses broad spectrum light, says American Academy of Dermatology. Dermatologists have commonly used IPL therapy to remove wrinkles, freckles and suntan, and to even out skin tone.

The hand piece of the IPL device is placed over the damaged area of the face. It emits high-intensity visible lights which penetrate deep into the facial skin. They cause no harm to the skin surface but reduce all the blemishes.

Application of this cosmetic procedure can result in hair loss, reddened and bruised skin and pain during the treatment.

Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic light therapy
is a cosmetic treatment that kills the cancerous and damaged cells present in the skin. In photodynamic therapy, red laser light is used which is directed towards the damaged cells for destroying them. To begin photodynamic treatment, a medication called 5-aminoteulinic acid is applied to the skin to make it more sensitive to light. After 30 or more minutes, the affected area is exposed to blue light or intense pulse light.

If acne is treated with this therapy, the dermatologist asks the patient to leave the clinic after sunset as sun exposure can cause redness of the skin and light flaking. Alternatively, photodynamic treatment is used for treatment of internal cancer and skin cancer.

Possible side effects of this therapy include burning sensation, nausea, slight inflammation, pain and itching during the treatment, sunburns and skin infections in severe cases.

LED light Therapy

LED light therapy or photo rejuvenation or red light therapy stimulates increased production of collagen, which works great for reducing the signs of aging. LED light is directed towards the facial skin in this pain free procedure. In recent times, this therapy has gained popularity to effectively repair wrinkles, diminish age spots, fade skin blemishes, relieve skin discolouration, even out skin texture, minimise skin pores’ size and reduce the appearance of scars.

After a LED light therapy session, you may experience tingling and redness of the treated facial skin. This is a lengthy treatment and you may require four to six months to obtain the best result as desired.
