Do you spend a lot of time sitting in front of the TV or computer? You will need to change this habit because a new study has found that spending a lot of time during the day in a chair or on a couch leads to calcification in the coronary artery.
The study, which is to be presented at the American College of Cardiology’s 64th Annual Scientific Session, said that irrespective of the amount of exercise that one might do during the day, sitting for long durations can cause coronary artery calcification. This is an indicator of heart problems.
The study did not find any association between coronary artery calcification and the amount of exercise that one gets, thereby highlighting the fact that sitting too much and for too long can negate the impact that exercising has on coronary artery calcium. According to the study, reducing the amount of time one sits every day can represent a good strategy to reduce cardiovascular risk. This phenomenon has been given the name of “sitting disease” though it is a risk factor related to one’s lifestyle and not a medical condition.
The study opens eyes to a unique perspective on the many side-effects of a sedentary lifestyle because it links sitting with an early marker for the risk of heart diseases, thus laying the foundation for studies that may investigate whether changing the habits could lead to a reversal of damage before one develops a full-blown heart condition.
The researchers analysed heart scans as well as physical activity records of more than 2, 000 adults who have been living in Dallas. They found that each hour of sedentary time in a day on average accounted for 14percent increase in the risk of coronary artery calcification. The association was seen to be independent of any physical activity as well as other traditional heart disease risk factors.
