Do you consider yourself a fitness enthusiast?  Do you think you have been eating and drinking the right things to maximize your efforts at the gym? Our body needs fuel to sustain during a workout just like a car needs fuel to run. When it comes to body building or work out, we all focus on what foods and drinks we should include in our diet to get better outcomes. But what we fail to see is that there are foods and drinks that we shouldn’t consume before workout as they can sabotage your fitness success. Below are some drinks that you should stay away from before the workout.

Milk based energy drinks

Love drinking drinks with dairy before you start sweating out in the gym? Well, we suggest you should save them for after the workout. Wondering why? That’s because it takes longer to digest dairy products due to protein, carbohydrates and fat contents. Experts recommend that it’s better to drink dairy containing beverages post workout rather than consuming them prior or during the workouts. Instead, go for whey protein packets mixed with filtered water, as it will provide you the benefits of protein without taking long for digestion. 

Sugary fruit drinks

Who does not love those lip smacking sugary fruit drinks? Everyone does! But they are certainly not the best choice to drink before workout. Most of these fruity drinks contain high fructose corn syrup, a man made sweetener, that can initiate liver dysfunction, metabolic syndrome and obesity.  A better choice would be to drink water with added flavour of mint, fresh citrus fruits, berries or mint. You can also opt for coconut water to replenish the electrolytes that you will be losing during your workout. 

Booze

You may not want to hear this but consuming a beer hours before you hit the gym can mess up your workout. Alcohol causes dehydration and inflammation. Instead, have some coffee as it will not only make you more alert but also improve your exercise performance.

Carbonated beverages

Fizzy drinks like soda and seltzer should be a big no! It won’t be easy for you to work out with a bloated belly, abdominal pain, and gas. Such drinks contain significant amounts of sodium which draws water out of your body cells causing dehydration.  Instead, drink an iced cold green tea before a workout, as it is high in antioxidants and reduces the risk of several types of cancer.
