Delhiites are Not Breathing Easy

Increasing concentration of pollutants, especially particulate matter (PM), has been deteriorating air quality continuously in the capital city. According to health statistics released by the Delhi Government, 23 people die every day due to respiratory diseases.

Delhiites seem to have been paying an increasingly heavy price owing to deteriorating air quality of the city, with doubled reported cases in the past four years. The diminishing quality of air quality has been pointed as one of the major triggers of respiratory conditions such as chronic bronchitis, lung cancer and infections. Moreover, more and more patients are complaining of chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases.

In 2007, annual deaths due to respiratory disease were 4246. The number rose to 8590 in 2011. Health experts have cautioned that worsening of air quality may cause more fatalities in the coming years if appropriate measures are not taken.
