Kidney disease, characterised by build-up of waste materials and fluids inside the body, occurs when the nephrons inside the kidneys are damaged.

kidney disease symptoms menKidney disease is often referred to as ‘silent disease’ as it has no warning signs. Kidney function deteriorates over time, but if a kidney disease is diagnosed early, you can do certain things that can help increase the life span of your kidneys. Symptoms of kidney diseases in men are mentioned below.

Body Changes

The shape of a man’s body changes when he is suffering from some or the other type of kidney disease. For instance, there may be changes in weight, growth of facial or body hair in strange places, changes in complexion, absurd body odour and breath, etc.

Rash, Itching and Swelling

Development of rashes and itchy parts of the body are common when suffering from a kidney disease. The kidney's failure to remove waste from the blood stream can cause severe itching. A person with kidney problems may have swelling in one or several areas of their body.

Urinary Tract Infections

Urinary tract infections that are uncommon in men are one of the indicators of kidney problems.  If not addressed quickly, the infections can lead to serious infection.

Flank Pain

Severe pain in the flank of the body is indicative of a possible kidney problem. If you experience this pain often, there might be something to be wary of and seek immediate help for. Flank pain could be a kidney stone. The pain in the flank can make the kidneys swell and should therefore, be reported to a doctor immediately.

Sexual Problems

If you have sexual problems like low libido, you may be suffering from a kidney disease. Kidney problems can make a person lethargic making him feel too tired to engage in intercourse. Erectile dysfunction is another indication of kidney problems.

Lethargy

The build-up of acid in the body and urea in the bloodstream can lead to general weakness and lethargy, one of the prominent signs of kidney disease. A person with kidney disease may lose appetite and experience breathing problems. This happens as the lungs work harder to buffer the acidity in the body by blowing off carbon dioxide. This may up the blood pressure, put strain on the heart and circulatory system. In some cases, cognitive functions of a person may slow down considerably and even make him fall into coma.

Risk factors for kidney disease include high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, obesity, autoimmune diseases, urinary tract infections, systemic infections, and kidney loss, damage, injury or infection. There will be no symptoms initially, but will become evident when the kidney disease has advanced.

If you wait to be tested until you have symptoms, the problem may advance to such an extent that even treatment may not be able to rescue you. Recognising the symptoms of kidney disease and beginning treatment early can help you avoid more serious problems. There are several other conditions with similar symptoms as kidney diseases. Therefore, see a doctor to determine if kidney disease is really what is causing your symptoms.
