Now that the CBSE results are already out, stress levels are only soaring higher and higher.
It’s not just the students but also the stressed out parents who are heading to psychiatrists for help.
The logic is pretty simple. Parents thrust their expectations onto their children. And, sometimes it is the kids themselves who set unrealistic goals for themselves.
With already two students having committed suicide, parents feel an urgent need for some tips to help their child cope with their result in case it fails to meet the expectation of the latter.
Children primarily take such extreme steps when in comparison to their friends they find don’t find a strong hold on their future/career. Also, there might be some sense of guilt for not having lived up to the expectation of their parents.
Dos and Don’t’s for Parents:
- Take charge of the situation and hear your child speak.
- Comfort them through a healthy conversation; do not reprimand your child.
- Watch out for behaviour that are signs (such as low self-esteem and aggression) enough to hint upon the fact that your child is stepping towards depression.
- Suicidal threats of your child must be taken seriously lest you repent later.
- Your relatives/neighbours would definitely ask you about your child’s result. You don’t need to be ashamed of your child’s performance.
Words of Advice for Students:
- What you want is not what you always get!
- Donot stop socializing. Speak to your close friend/relative (could be a cousin or uncle and aunt) and discuss what exactly is going in your mind.
- Allow a healthy discussion to ensue between you and your parents on a few issues such as the subject you must take up hereafter.
- If you still think that you’re not able to deal with it you can call student’s helpline number and chalk out what is next in store for you.
Students can dial toll-free number 1800-11-7002 from anywhere in the country. This number will direct them to the CBSE helpline.
