Physical Causes

Dipping libido in women is often caused by physical discomforts, such as certain infections and diseases, their treatment course and their symptoms. Some of these discomforts are listed below.

  • Sex problems, such as vaginal pain during intercourse, vaginal dryness, delayed orgasm or inability to have an orgasm.
  • Various illnesses, such as diabetes, hypertension, arthritis, cancer, heart ailments and neurological diseases.
  • Treatment course of illnesses or prescribed medications, such as anti-depressants and anti-seizure drugs.
  • Genital tract surgery and breast surgery cause post-treatment pain and discomfort.
  • Personal and professional responsibilities hovering over your head.
  • Insomnia or sleep apnoea may also be blamed for low sex drive in women because sleep deprivation leads to reduced testosterone levels, thus low sexual desire in women.

Hormonal Causes

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding— A woman’s body goes through tumultuous hormonal changes during pregnancy, thus her sex drive suffers during and post pregnancy. Another hormonal change that causes a woman’s libido to go for a toss is breastfeeding. Apart from hormonal changes during pregnancy and breastfeeding, the added responsibilities with the arrival of the baby may also be blamed for decreased sex desire.

Menopause— When a woman enters the menopausal stage, the estrogen levels drop dramatically, leading to vaginal dryness, which in turn affects her interest in engaging in any form of sexual endeavours.  It’s not necessary that going through menopause will affect your sex life. The impact menopause may have on a woman’s sex life varies from woman to woman i.e. while some may continue to have a satisfying sexual life after menopause, others may not.[Read: Is Sex Painful after Menopause?]

Psychological Causes

Relationship Issues— Unresolved issues between a couple can lead to low libido. Emotional intimacy is an essential element for sexual desire and satisfaction. If a woman is persistently subjected to emotional or physical harassment or miscommunication in her relationship, her sex drive will certainly go for a toss. [Read: How to Resolve Intimacy Issues]

Depression— If a woman is marred by depression, she is more likely to have delayed orgasm or not have any at all.  Depression affects the brain’s chemicals that trigger blood flow to sex organs. Effects of depression on a woman’s sexual life range from mental upheaval to poor libido.

Stress— Stress can mar the production of cortisol and adrenaline, which are necessary hormones to trigger sexual desire in a woman. If a woman experiences stress, her libido will naturally decrease.

It is advisable that you open communication channels with your partner and discuss about your problem to prevent any threats of damage to your relationship. Consult a doctor to get rid of the cause of your deprived sex life.
