The answer is yes. Promiscuity or casual sex with multiple partners not only promises a poor sexual health but also a decreased longevity. This is because the more your sexual partners are the more you are vulnerable to STDs such as HIV/AIDS along with other life-threatening conditions such as cervical cancer, prostate cancer and oral cancer.

Promiscuity, according to Deirdre Lee Fitzgerald, PhD, assistant professor of psychology at Eastern Connecticut State University in Willimantic, is an example of high-risk behaviours that can be compared to heavy drinking, gambling etc.

Impact of casual sex on personal health

STDs: shed myths such as the impossibility of getting an STD unless you have sexual intercourse. STDs can easily transfer from one body to another by way of the contact of bodily fluids. The viruses and STDs can penetrate into your bloodstream through cuts in the anus, mouth or other parts of the body, in general and genitals, in particular.

HIV and AIDS: being promiscuous increases one’s susceptibility to the AIDS virus. Despite of all the awareness and education about HIV/ AIDS, AIDS continues to kill more than 14,000 people a year.

Other health conditions: if casual sex is accompanied by other risky behaviours such as heavy drinking, smoking, substance abuse, poor diet, insomnia etc, you may be vulnerable to chronic diseases such as those related to the heart.

Physical abuse: as per research, couples who indulge in a long term relationship suffer way less from domestic violence compared with those who are in a live-in relationship or live in the same city/town.

Impact of Casual sex on emotional health

One of the most prominently known myths about casual sex is that most men have more than one sexual partner compared with women. According to several studies, about 33% of men and 9 percent of women have reported to have had more than 10 sexual partners in their lifetime. Having more than an average number of sexual partners catalyses major sexual health risks. Some of the prominent and immediate impact of casual sex on emotional health is that of high risk behaviours such as making dangerous choices. In fact, practicing casual sex may be a symptom of depression in some people. Moreover, having multiple partners helps in making it difficult to sustain a healthy relationship.
